Achieve Water Quality Improvement Without Chemicals! ― Water Flow Generator Protecting Reservoir Aesthetics and Safety ―

Local Government Urban Development Department

A Certain Local Government Retention Basin

The newly constructed municipal recreation pond was not only a place for local residents to relax, but also played an important role in preventing the river from overflowing by drawing water from nearby rivers during heavy rains.
However, in early spring, large amounts of blue-green algae and blue-green algae were growing, causing serious problems such as deterioration of the landscape, foul odors, and even water supply and drainage stoppages due to clogged pumps.
The client was also keen to avoid the use of chemicals due to the presence of rice fields in the neighborhood, so a method was required that would ensure improvement while minimizing the environmental impact.

We proposed a solution that combined a bottom-mounted water flow generator with an ultrasonic device to kill algae.
We would like to introduce our efforts in this case, which achieved both water quality improvement and safe operation without relying on chemicals.

Challenges

  • Deterioration of landscape and occurrence of foul odors due to massive proliferation of filamentous algae and blue-green algae
  • Increased risk of water supply and drainage stoppage due to filamentous algae entangling pumps
  • Need for water quality improvement without using chemicals, considering the impact on nearby farmland

Solution

  • Installation of multiple bottom-mounted water flow generation devices (with aeration) "Jet Streamer"
  • Proposed layout design to form effective water flow

Results

  • Daytime operation of the devices suppressed the occurrence and aggregation of blue-green algae and filamentous algae, significantly improving surface greening and foul odors
  • Water flow prevented filamentous algae from approaching pumps, stabilizing water supply and drainage functions
➡ Achieved water quality improvement with reduced environmental impact without using chemicals

What is the growing algae problem and operational risk in closed water bodies?

In the Recreational Pond, blue-green algae and blue-green algae had begun to multiply rapidly with the rise in water temperature in early spring. As a closed body of water, the detention pond had a weak water flow and nutrients could easily stagnate, creating an environment conducive to algae colonization. As a result, not only was the water surface covered with a greenish color, spoiling the landscape, but the decomposing algae emitted a foul odor that greatly reduced the value of the area to residents. What was even more serious was that the blue-green algae could become entangled in the pumps that connected the reservoir to the river, causing the water supply and drainage to stop. This was a problem that the local government could not overlook, because if the flood control function was impaired, safety would be affected during heavy rainfall. In addition, there were restrictions on the use of chemicals due to the presence of rice fields in the neighborhood, so a solution was required that would ensure improvement while taking the environment into consideration.

Synergistic Effects of Water Flow and Ultrasonic Waves to Root Cause Algae Outbreak

We therefore installed several bottom-mounted water flow generators (equipped with aeration), taking into account the shape, depth, and inflow/outflow position of the pond.
This creates a "circulating flow" in the stagnant water area, creating an environment that prevents algae from colonizing.
In addition, the use of an ultrasonic device to kill algae inhibits the growth of blue-green algae.
By operating during the daytime, the system effectively approaches algae during the time when their photosynthetic activity is active, and a mechanism has been established to suppress algae from the source.

Effects of the introduction of the system that simultaneously realized landscape improvement, functional stability, and environmental friendliness

After the introduction of the system, the occurrence of blue-green algae was greatly reduced and greening of the water surface was eliminated in the recreational pond.
The water flow prevented blue-green algae from approaching the pump, and the water supply and drainage functions were stabilized.
Also, foul odors caused by decomposing algae have been suppressed, restoring an environment that residents can use with peace of mind.
Since no chemicals are used, there is no impact on the surrounding fields, and the project is highly regarded by the local government as an environmentally friendly initiative.

Conclusion

In this case, a solution combining a water flow generator and an ultrasonic device proved to be highly effective in meeting the municipality's challenge of improving water quality without the use of chemicals.
The solution comprehensively improved the factors necessary for the safe and comfortable operation of the amusement pond, including the suppression of algae growth, prevention of pump clogging, improvement of the landscape, and suppression of foul odors.
Because it provides reliable results while reducing environmental impact, it is a very effective option for municipalities and companies facing similar issues, such as flood control facilities, park ponds, and regulating reservoirs.
If you are concerned about water quality improvement, please consider our solution.
